Household Hazardous Waste

Residents of the Greater Avalon region can now dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) on a regular and convenient basis at the new HHW location at the Robin Hood Bay Regional Waste Management Facility.

Where:

The HHW location at the Robin Hood Bay Regional Integrated Waste Management Facility located at 340 East White Hills Road.

When:

8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Saturday from June to November 2011

Household Hazardous Wastes are the left-over products from hazardous products used in the home. Some of these wastes exhibit poisonous, combustible, explosive and/or flammable properties. When compared with other types of wastes, HHW are a small component of the waste stream. If HHW are discarded into the residential solid waste stream, the storm sewer system, or the natural environment, environmental damage may occur. If products are improperly stored in the home there may be negative impacts on the health of the residents.

What to Bring:

  • Motor oils
  • Solvents
  • Propane tanks - do not leave valve open
  • Glues
  • Brake and clutch fluids
  • Wood preservatives and stains
  • Pool chemicals
  • Cleaning fluids
  • Disinfectants
  • Paints: oil and latex (Do not mix!)
  • Drain and oven cleaners
  • Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, flea powders
  • Gas
  • BBQ starter
  • Lighter fluid
  • Paint stripper, turpentine
  • Aerosol containers
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Batteries, battery acids
  • Mercury
  • Prescription drugs
  • Fluorescent light tubes
  • Compact fluorescent lights - energy saving bulbs

What NOT to Bring:

  • Empty paint cans - these are for your regular curbside garbage collection
  • Explosives & Ammunition
  • Fireworks
  • PCBs
  • Biomedical waste
  • Industrial, commercial and institutional waste
  • Radioactive waste

How to Bring It:

  • Seal containers securely (screw tops, paint lids, etc).
  • Bring the materials in the trunk of your car but DO NOT put items in tied plastic bags; instead transport in open-topped boxes.
  • Please make sure all propane tanks have the valves closed and that there is plenty of ventilation in your vehicle.
  • We recommend that you wear gloves when handling products.
  • Follow traffic signs and instructions at the Robin Hood Bay facility.

This facility is for residential waste only.
