Committee Members

The Minister of Municipal Affairs for Newfoundland and Labrador has established the Eastern Waste Management Committee as the interim body that will advance a waste management action plan for the Greater Avalon region.

The geographic area of Eastern Waste Management stretches from the Avalon Peninsula to Clarenville including Random Island and communities to Burgoyne’s Cove in the east and to Swift Current to the west.

To date, the Committee has selected an independent Chair, drafted a work plan, and attended meetings with sub-regional committees in the Southwest Avalon, Southern Shore, Isthmus, tip of the Bay de Verde peninsula and Trinity Bay North. The Committee has also established sub-committees to focus on subjects such as communications and policy development. In addition, a website has been developed to keep all stakeholders informed about the Committee’s activities.

The purpose of the Committee is to develop a plan that meets the needs of all current and future users of the Robin Hood Bay facility. This plan will be submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for consideration and implementation.

The Committee will develop a comprehensive plan that is reasonable in cost for each user and identifies the most cost effective and environmentally sustainable options for modernizing waste management in the region.

This consolidated approach will ensure that each component fits into the overall waste management system and takes advantage of economies of scale where possible. It also avoids each municipality struggling to develop its own action plan for waste management.

The Committee can assist each community and avoid each community re-creating the wheel in its attempt to meet the objectives of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy.
